Latest News from the project

(October 30, 2024)

We have delivered a total of 4,110 kg of Lombricompost for the COBIGA - La Gamba Biological Corridor (Corredor Biológico La Gamba) reforestation project by October 2024.

Planting in the "La Gamba Biological Corridor" in 2024

This year, 2024, 6,000 rainforest trees will be planted in the La Gamba Biological Corridor by the La Gamba Tropical Station, binding 6,000 x 700 kg of CO2 in 60 years, equal to 4,200,000 kg or 4,200t of CO2 with an added value of 4,200 t X 82€/t = 344,400€.

At €45.00 for the CO2 certificates 2024 in Germany and Austria, it is €189,000 and for the production of the earthworm fertilizer it is still €22,680 with a CO2 balance of 12% of 4,200t, equal to 504 t CO2

This time we brought pepper from our pepper farmer Daniel

(04 April 2024)

Have delivered a total of 1,110 kg of worm compost for the reforestation project (COBIGA - La Gamba Biological Corridor (Corredor Biológico La Gamba)) by April. This will mean that 3,500 rainforest trees will be planted this year. Still do not have a safe crossing of the Rio Esquina. In May are the new heads of government in Power. Hopefully the construction of a bridge will finally begin. We are working intensively with our Lombricompost and will deliver another 2,000 kg to the station in June of this year Our roof is set up. The Ranchito will be on our next mission. The Sweetes palms are thriving and the first 70 plants will be planted this year.

Unfortunately, our pepper farmer Daniel didn't have any pepper. The harvest was too small.

December 23, 2023

By December we had delivered a total of 2000 kg of Lombricompost for the reforestation project (COBIGA - Biological Corridor La Gamba (Corredor Biológico La Gamba). In addition, 2000 kg were delivered to other customers. We still have 2400 kg ready by the end of the year.

Our 70 rainforest palm seedlings will soon be ready for planting and these will be planted next April 2024. Kevin also replanted 200 new bananas. We urgently need these for our compost. A new greenhouse is under construction. In the future, rainforest plants will be grown here.

This time too we brought 10 kg of organically grown fresh pepper with us. Sandra and Tim, Gisela and Volker, Bernd and Uschi and Frauke and Winfried are the busy buyers and thus support our environmental project.

Unfortunately the crossing in the Rio Esquina has not improved. An excavator is needed and that costs a lot.

(04 May 2023)

Have delivered a total of 1000 kg Lombricompost for the reforestation project (COBIGA - Biological Corridor La Gamba (Corredor Biológico La Gamba) until April. The finca was completely neglected and was put in order with the help of Louis and Angel. Especially the worm farm had to partially renewed so that our hard-working helpers, the earthworms, have a good home again.

The river crossing is possible again from February. The Comité de Emergencia was in La Virgen at the beginning of April and assessed the situation; Result: a pedestrian bridge should be built as soon as possible. At the end of April, the Alcalde was with us and announced that a drivable suspension bridge and a connection with San Miguel should be built from December. Good news.

Deiner and Marcela left us head over heels at the end of January. Kevin has been with us since the beginning of April.

Have planted 250 seeds from a protected rainforest palm and will hopefully put the plants in plant bags when they grow and then plant them on our finca at the end of the year. Although this rainforest palm (Asterogyne martiana) does not store as much CO2 as a rainforest tree, it is an enrichment in the rainforest.

We are still looking for volunteers from June 2023.

First and foremost, we keep the finca to protect the rainforest. At the same time, we want to involve the people who live there. Previously in La Virgen they had no water supply, nor did they have electricity.

With the help of our supporters, we have achieved a lot. And for that we thank all of you who have helped us.

(October 17, 2022)

Have delivered a total of 3550 kg Lombricompost for the reforestation project (COBIGA - Biological Corridor La Gamba (Corredor Biológico La Gamba) until October. This will plant 5000 rainforest trees this year.

We had heavy rains in August/September/October. The Rio Esquina has been impassable since the end of August. The crossing is destroyed and can only be restored at the end of the year after the rainy season. The Comite de Emergencia was in La Virgen at the end of September to assess the damage. A pedestrian suspension bridge is to be built.

In September we brought the 2000 kg Lombricompost 600 meters to the river with the horses and then carried it on the shoulder over a quickly built footbridge to the other side of the river, loaded it into the car and delivered it to the station. The jetty that was attached to the shore held up twice, then on October 9 it was smashed by another tidal wave.

Earthworm fertilizer is produced diligently. The reforestation of the biological corridor begins again in mid-June 2019. For this purpose, our earthworm compost is used. In the medium term, 10,000 trees will be planted (see also the Environmental Report in the Vienna Kronenzeitung).
